New Accident Kits & Online Reporting

Accident kit

We hope you never need it, but new accident kits are currently being placed in all vanpool vehicles while they are at Pierce Transit for service and swaps.

We know accidents are stressful and we want to make things as easy as possible. Your new kit will include updated materials that make it easier for you to collect and report information after an accident, including a new instruction card and a newly released online Collision Report and Courtesy Card.

Even if you haven’t received your new accident kit yet, all collision reports, accident photos, and other supporting documents can now be completed online at www.PierceTransit.org/CollisionReport.

Accident Avoidance

Accident scene

Speaking of never needing to use your new accident kit… Please stay safe on the road by actively engaging in these accident prevention strategies provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

  • Awareness: 15-passenger vehicles handle differently than cars, especially when fully loaded. Adapt your driving behavior accordingly.
  • Attention: Stay focused on safe driving by staying well rested, never using a phone while driving, and limiting conversation with other passengers.
  • Speed: Obey the posted speed limit and reduce your speed as needed based on road and weather conditions.
  • Distance: Remember that larger vehicles require additional braking time compared to smaller vehicles.
  • Seat Belts: All occupants must wear seat belts. Please inspect seat belts regularly and let us know of any missing, broken, or damaged belts and/or buckles.
  • Occupancy: Fill the seats from front to back. When the vehicle is not full, passengers should sit in seats that are in front of the rear axle.
  • Size: 12- and 15-passenger vehicles are substantially longer and wider than an average car, requiring more space to maneuver. Vans require additional reliance on the side-view mirrors when changing lanes.

Need a refresher on safe driving strategies? Our online driver refresher course has helpful reminders about safe driving habits. The course is required every five years for approved vanpool drivers but can be taken at any time.

Contact us at Vanpool@PierceTransit.org for access to the online driver refresher course.

Don't Forget the Key Tag

Key tags

Any time you receive a key to a vanpool vehicle, it will be attached to a tag with the vehicle number. Please do not remove the tag, combine multiple keys and tags on the same key ring, or return a key to Piece Transit without a vehicle number.

Each key should have its own tag and remain separate from other keys and tags. As you can imagine, it is challenging to identify which vehicle a key belongs to without the tag.

We appreciate your help keeping the keys to our fleet clearly labeled.

Thank you for choosing to commute with Pierce Transit!
